New Scholarship in Memory of Delmar McCormack Smyth Will Inspire the Next Generation of Radiation Safety Professionals

The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada (RSIC), in collaboration with the Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA), has announced the launch of a scholarship in memory of Delmar McCormack (Mac) Smyth (1923–2011). The scholarship will mark a pivotal moment in RSIC’s history—the 45th anniversary of the institute and the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Fergal Nolan National Laboratories in Saskatoon, SK.
Delmar was one of RSIC’s founding forces, serving as the founding chair and later honorary life chair of the institute’s board of directors. A scholar, educator, public servant, and visionary leader, Delmar dedicated his life to learning, public service, and the pursuit of a safer, more peaceful world. His work in government, academia, and community leadership helped shape institutions that continue to serve Canadians today.
This scholarship celebrates Delmar’s legacy by supporting students who are committed to advancing radiation safety and protecting workers, the public, and the environment. It is intended to encourage the next generation of leaders whose curiosity, integrity, and sense of service reflect the values that Delmar embodied.
The scholarship is funded by RSIC and administered by CRPA. The number and value of scholarships to be awarded each year will be determined annually based on available funding. For 2026, three scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded, along with conference registration (including banquet tickets) and three nights of hotel accommodation for recipients who choose to attend the CRPA annual conference.
To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students at a Canadian post-secondary institution, enrolled in a program related to radiation safety. They will be required to submit an essay on “Why radiation safety matters in today’s world, and how [they] hope to contribute to this field.” The deadline for submissions for the 2026 scholarships is January 31, 2026.
The winners will be announced at the CRPA conference banquet on May 28, 2026, at the CARST-CRPA Symposium on Radon and Radiation Protection in Saskatoon, SK.
