On March 12, 2019, Kimihiro Ishikane, ambassador of Japan to Canada, conferred the Ambassador’s Award upon Christopher Clement, scientific secretary of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the ensuing nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on March 11, 2011, Clement has been contributing to the organization of a series of dialogue seminars with the people of Fukushima to deepen their understanding of radiological protection. His role is significant not only for the reconstruction of disaster-affected areas, but also for the promotion of mutual understanding and friendly relations between Japan and Canada. Clement was given the Ambassador’s Award for this distinguished service.

At the beginning of the ceremony, participants watched a short video entitled Fukushima Dreams and Beyond, which shows the current situation of disaster-affected areas. After the earthquake, tsunami, and TEPCO Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in March 2011, Fukushima and other disaster-affected areas underwent a period of recovery. The region now boasts the world’s most stringent food safety checks. The video highlights the resilience of the people who live there and their renewed sense of hope.

Following the video, Ambassador Ishikane extended his deepest regards to Clement, who has played a significant role in the reconstruction of the area as an expert on radiological protection. The presentation also included congratulatory messages from H.E. Yoshiaki Harada, minister of the environment of Japan.

Clement expressed his gratitude for the Ambassador’s Award and reaffirmed his wish to continue supporting the reconstruction of disaster-affected areas.
