New CRPA Task Group to Support Radiation Professionals in Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) Industries
The Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) recognizes that most provinces and territories do not have formal waste control regulations addressing naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM). To that end, CRPA has established a NORM Task Group to support radiation professionals in NORM industries. This initiative is consistent with our mission:
We strive to ensure the safe use of radiation by providing scientific knowledge, education, expertise, and policy guidance for radiation protection.
The NORM Task Group will be approving course content and administering a three-day NORM Radiation Safety Officer Course designed for professionals working in NORM industries. We expect this to be available for the summer of 2024.
Also this summer, a half-day training session, Class 7 Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) for NORM training, will be held at the 2024 CPRA annual conference. The course is based on the Canadian NORM guidelines, Volume III Transportation: Canadian Guidelines for the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM), and is intended to ensure shippers have the necessary training to properly ship NORM waste or equipment in accordance with the Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulations and the Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
