The Meritorious Service Award recognizes significant service provided to the Canadian Radiation Protection Association (CRPA) or to the radiation protection community in general. This year, the award was presented to Dr. Edward Waller for his support of, and service to, CRPA. Read about some of the many reasons why Ed’s contributions to the association makes him very deserving of the award.
Chief Editor Dave Niven interviews Tara Hargreaves, a new member of CRPA’s board of directors. Tara says, “CRPA is the way to connect with those working in radiation safety across Canada. . . I would feel rather alone if I weren’t a member.”

Dave Niven, the Bulletin’s editor in chief, is welcoming back pretty much everything! Back to work in the office, back to travel plans . . . but most of all, he’s beyond excited for the return of in-person conferences. He talks about the opportunities that came out of a recent International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) conference and looks forward to ICRP 2021+1 in Vancouver in November.
In this issue of the Bulletin, continuing his tradition of interviewing interesting people involved in radiation protection, Chief Editor Dave Niven talks with Leah Shuparski-Miller, CRPA’s president-elect. He asks her about her life, her history with CRPA, her motivations for becoming president, and what she hopes to accomplish during her tenure. She says, “Sharing information openly helps us all grow and strengthen our radiation protection community.”
In June 2020, in response to protests and riots against police brutality and systemic racism taking place in the US, Canada, and the rest of the world, CRPA committed to re-evaluating their code of ethics and created the President’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI Task Force).
With deepest regret, we note the passing of Dr. Norman E. Gentner on January 14, 2021, in Renfrew, Ontario.
The 2019 conference was held in Ottawa May 27–30. The theme was “Connecting with Communities.” / Le congrès 2019 a eu lieu à Ottawa du 27 au 30 mai. Le thème du congrès était « Tisser des liens avec les communautés ».
